Eating Through Each Trimester on an Indian Diet

Your needs change as your pregnancy progresses, but the base stays the same: varied, home-style meals with enough protein, vegetables, fruit, grains, and dairy or other calcium-rich foods. Please keep taking any supplements your doctor has prescribed.
First trimester
Nausea and food aversions are common. Small, frequent meals and simple foods can help, so do not worry if your diet is not perfect for a while. Speak to your doctor if you cannot keep food or fluids down.
Second trimester
Many people find their appetite returns. Your energy needs start to rise, though you do not need to eat for two. This is a good time to make sure your meals include foods with iron and protein, such as dal, legumes, green leafy vegetables, eggs, or meat, depending on what you eat.
Third trimester
As your baby grows, large meals may feel uncomfortable, and heartburn is common. Smaller, more frequent meals can help. Keep drinking fluids through the day.
Food safety throughout
Choose pasteurised milk and dairy, wash fruit and vegetables well, and cook eggs, meat, and fish thoroughly. Ask your doctor about caffeine and anything else you are unsure of.
