Your BMI
BMI is a rough screening measure. It does not reflect body composition, and it is not meant for children or during pregnancy. A consultation gives a fuller picture. This is general information, not individual medical advice. Nothing you enter here is stored or sent.
BMI is your weight divided by the square of your height. These are the ranges for adults. Many South Asian adults can face health risks at a lower BMI, which is why two sets of cut-offs are shown.
BMI = weight in kg ÷ (height in m × height in m)
| Range | General (WHO) | Many Indian adults |
|---|---|---|
| Below the usual range | Under 18.5 | Under 18.5 |
| Within the usual range | 18.5 to 24.9 | 18.5 to 22.9 |
| Above the usual range | 25 to 29.9 | 23 to 24.9 |
| Well above the usual range | 30 or more | 25 or more |

Clear Answers, No Jargon
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres. Whichever units you enter, the calculator converts them first, so the answer is the same.
The general cut-offs come from the World Health Organization. Research shows that many South Asian adults can face health risks such as type 2 diabetes at a lower BMI, so guidelines for Indian adults use lower cut-offs. The calculator shows both.
It is a quick screening measure, not a diagnosis. It does not separate muscle from fat or show where you carry weight, so a muscular person can have a high BMI and still be healthy.
No. Children are assessed with age-specific growth charts, and weight during pregnancy is assessed differently. Please speak to your paediatrician or doctor instead.
Treat it as one piece of information. If your result worries you, or your weight has changed without you trying, talk to your doctor or a qualified professional, who can look at your whole health.
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is stored or sent to anyone.
