Grain and Dal Portions When Your Blood Sugar Is High

[CLIENT: draft sample post. Review or replace before publishing.]
If your blood sugar is high, you may have been told to cut out rice or roti. Most people do not need to give them up entirely. How much you eat, and what you eat with them, often matters more.
Start with your plate
A simple guide is to fill about half your plate with vegetables, a quarter with grains, and a quarter with a protein food such as dal, legumes, curd, paneer, eggs, fish, or meat. This is a starting point, not a fixed rule.
Remember that dal contains carbohydrate too
Dal and legumes provide protein and fibre, and they also contain carbohydrate. A generous serving of dal alongside a large serving of rice can add up, so look at the meal as a whole.
Check what happens for you
Foods affect people differently. If you check your blood sugar at home, your readings can show you how your usual meals affect you. Your doctor can tell you when to test and what your targets are.
Take care if you use medicines
If you take insulin or certain other diabetes medicines, a big change in how much you eat can make your blood sugar drop too low. Talk to your doctor before making large changes.
