How this was calculated
Waist-to-height is your waist divided by your height, with a cut-off of 0.5. The waist cut-offs for South Asian adults are 90 cm for men and 80 cm for women (IDF). Waist-to-hip is your waist divided by your hip, with cut-offs of 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women (WHO).

These are screening measures, not a diagnosis. They are for adults, and not meant during pregnancy. This is an estimate for general information only, not medical advice.
Why Your Waist Matters
Fat stored deep around the middle behaves differently from fat stored elsewhere. It sits close to organs such as the liver, and it is linked with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Many South Asian adults tend to carry more of their weight in this area, even when their overall weight looks normal.
BMI can miss this, because it knows only your height and weight. A tape measure around the waist adds something that the scales can’t show.
The Three Measures
Waist-to-height ratio is your waist divided by your height. At 0.5 or above, health risk is thought to rise. It leads to a simple rule of thumb: keep your waist to less than half your height.
Waist size compares the measurement itself with a cut-off. The International Diabetes Federation uses 90 cm for South Asian men and 80 cm for South Asian women. These are lower than the figures used for many other groups.
Waist-to-hip ratio is your waist divided by your hip. The World Health Organization uses 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women. It shows how your weight is spread between the middle and the hips.
Measuring Well
Use a soft tape on bare skin or light clothing. Find the point halfway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone, and measure there after breathing out normally. Measure your hip around the widest part. Keep the tape level all the way round, and measure at the same time of day when you check again.
Using Your Result
These are screening measures, and being above a cut-off does not mean that you have a disease. It is a good reason to look at the wider picture, including a check of blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure if you haven’t had one lately.
Steady changes in food, movement, and sleep can all help reduce waist size over time. If you would like a plan built around your meals and your routine, a nutritionist can help.
Questions About Waist Measures
Clear Answers, No Jargon
Where should I measure my waist?
Halfway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone is the usual point. Stand relaxed, breathe out normally, and keep the tape level and snug without pressing in.
Which of the three measures matters most?
They answer slightly different questions, and no single one is best for everyone. Waist-to-height is simple and works across heights, so it appears at the top of your result.
What if one is above the cut-off and the others are not?
It is still worth a look, but it is not a diagnosis. Talk to your doctor or a nutritionist, who can look at it alongside your blood reports, blood pressure, and family history.
Can I use this during pregnancy?
No. Your waist naturally changes during pregnancy, so these cut-offs do not apply. Please follow your doctor's advice.
